About Wimbledon High School

Wimbledon High School is an independent day school in Wimbledon, South West London for 4-18-year-old girls. It was founded by the Girl’s’ Public Day School Trust (GDST) in 1880 and started with only 12 students but has since expanded to over 900.

The school officially became known as Wimbledon High School in 1911 and has a rich history. It survived through both World Wars, having to go under rebuilding in 1948 after the Blitz. In 1980, the school celebrated its centenary with concerts and a service of remembrance in Southwark Cathedral. Most recently, they held a celebration for its 140th anniversary in 2020. 

Wimbledon High offers an extensive extra-curricular programme, a pastoral atmosphere, and partnerships with multiple charities. Through their STEAM programme (a collaboration between Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths subjects), students have achieved national awards and have had research published in international journals. They are also proudly a Microsoft Showcase School.

The school boasts great academic results with 93% of 2021 leavers’ going to their first choice university, 66% of A Level results being A*s, and 95% of GCSE results being 9s or 8s

Admissions information for 2027 entry to Wimbledon High School at 11 Plus (11+)

The deadline for submitting applications for 2027 11+ entry to Wimbledon High School is early November 2026. 

You will be sent the exact details of your child’s assessment day in November 2026 and your child will sit two paper-based assessments at the school later again in November 2026. 

Following the Stage 1 exam, your child may be invited to a Stage 2 exam, also referred to as ‘Creative Assessment Day ’, where your child will take part in group and individual activities. These sessions allow the school to get to know your child better and see how they use their problem-solving and creative writing skills. You will receive an invitation to the Creative Assessment Day in early December 2026 and the assessment will take place in January 2027. 

If you would like to apply for a scholarship, this is a separate process and the school will invite your child, if selected, to an additional assessment of these skills in winter 2026-2027.

In February, you will hear if your child has been offered a place after the school has reviewed their entrance exam and Creative Assessment Day.

If you wish to accept the offer, you must do so by the deadline in March which involves submitting a deposit which will be refunded to you in your child’s last school term at Wimbledon High School. 

You will also hear about their school tours for all offer holders during this time; these aim to help your child adjust to their new environment come autumn 2027. The school also offers Open Mornings for 2027 entry which are available for booking through the WHS online portal on their website from spring 2026 to summer 2027.

How can I register my child for the 11 Plus (11+) exams at Wimbledon High School?

To register your child for the entrance exams, you must create a unique login to the WHS Admissions Portal which you can find on their website. After gaining access to the portal, you must pay a registration fee of £150 when applying to the school in the Spring.

It is important that you keep a record of the password and email address you use for this login as the portal will be used throughout the admissions process. For example, you can use the portal to apply for a scholarship, book into Open Mornings, and track your application process.

What is the entrance 11 Plus (11+) exam format for Wimbledon High School?

The exam format is divided into two stages:

Stage 1: November 2026

  • Verbal Reasoning – questions include finding common words and combinations, identifying antonyms, letter transfer and number codes
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning – may include questions about patterns and shapes 

These are both longer multiple-choice papers and your child must score approximately 80% or more to progress to Stage 2.

Stage 2 (Creative Assessment Day): Upon invitation following Stage 1, will test the following skills:

  • Creative
  • English
  • Maths

The latter two formatted as standard shorter assessments which do not offer multiple-choice options and your child must score approximately 85% to pass these written assessments.

WHS recommends that candidates use practice papers to particularly prepare for the Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning assessment to have the experience of being under timed conditions as well as to gain familiarity with the style and content of the assessment. Notably, the assessments are age-standardised (based on the candidate’s age and the assessment date) to ensure all candidates are equally considered.

How to prepare your child for the 11 Plus (11+) Wimbledon High School exam

The most useful way to prepare for Wimbledon High School’s 11+ entrance exam is to use practice tests to familiarise your child with the exam content and format.

These tests can help your child to build their confidence and improve their performance in the exam.
