Sutton Grammar School (SGS) is a selective boys’ grammar school with a co-educational sixth form. Situated in the centre of Sutton, SGS consistently ranks highly in national league tables, with the vast majority of their leavers securing university places at Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities. [1]

SGS offers its students a balanced and broad curriculum, with students achieving excellent results in both core subjects, such as maths, science and English, and more diverse subjects like drama and an array of foreign languages. [2]

SGS believe in nurturing their pupils to excel beyond the curriculum and offers a variety of extracurricular clubs and enrichment programmes, including organised trips, visitors to the school, activities and educational experiences. Some of the extracurricular activities at SGS include Philosophy Club, Debating Club, acting workshops, a range of sports options, acapella groups, and award opportunities like Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) and Combined Cadet Force (CCF). Admissions Information for 2024 Entry to Sutton Grammar School at 11 Plus (11+)

Sutton Grammar School complies with the coordinated admissions arrangements set out by the London Borough of Sutton. SGS shares an entrance test and registration process with the five other grammar schools in Sutton. The entrance test is called the Selective Eligibility Test (SET).

It is strongly recommended that prospective students and their parents attend one of Sutton Grammar School’s Open Evenings. The next Year 7 Open Evening will take place on 20 September 2023 and you can access more information about it here. Alternatively, you can find an in-depth virtual Open Evening here. This will give you and your child the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the facilities, meet the staff and ensure SGS is the right choice.

135 boys are admitted into Year 7, including any boys with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCP) or Statements of Special Education Needs who meet the School’s Admission Standard and have named SGS on their SHCP or statement. Places are then allocated based on the following criteria:

  • Looked after, or previously looked after, children
  • Boys with the highest scores in the SET who live in one of the specified postcodes: SM1-7, KT4, KT17, CR0 4–, CR4 (75 spaces)
  • Boys with the highest SET results who live in any postcode (max. 60 places)
  • Where SET scores are equal the space will be allocated based on the boy’s proximity to the school

How can I register my child for the 11 Plus (11+) exam at Sutton Grammar School?

You can register your child for the SET by completing the online application, available from 1 May to 4 August 2023 on any of the Sutton grammar schools’ websites. You only need to register for the test once to apply to any of these grammar schools.

You will receive your child’s SET results about a week after they complete it. Children who achieve the qualifying mark in the SET are then invited to take the Sutton Grammar School second stage test on 30 September 2023.

The boys’ grammar schools in Sutton share a second-stage test. However, please note that because the admissions criteria differs between these schools, children may be considered for the second-stage test at some schools, but not others.

You may then list Sutton Grammar School as a preference on your Common Application Form (CAF). This form must be submitted by 31 October 2023.
