St Olave’s School is a grammar school for boys aged 11-18 with a mixed Sixth Form located in Bromley, Greater London. The school currently cares for approximately 1,081 students and was founded in 1561, although it received its Royal Charter as a Grammar School in 1571.

The school’s motto is “Olaf to Right the Wrong” and its values are to encourage understanding, respect, and dignity for all, and to ensure that their students are determined, honest, and responsible so they are positive contributors to society.

They have on offer a range of fantastic facilities including fives and squash courts, cricket nets, sports fields, multipurpose drama/sports hall for badminton, table tennis, gym, and doce pares, multipurpose floodlit all-weather pitch for hockey, football, tennis, and netball, art rooms, canteen, classrooms, and outdoor seating areas.

In addition, they have a great co and extra-curricular program with clubs like chess, boardgame, and Greek, academic clinics, societies (including student-led societies) like Environmental and Space Society and the charitable Le Chabetois Society, student publications, house competitions, DofE,  trips and visits like UK/abroad rugby tours, European trips for modern languages, art gallery visits, and geography field trips.

Moreover, their students secured some excellent results in 2023. 91% of the A Level grades were A* to B with 76% being A*-A. As for GCSE results, 91% of the grades secured by pupils were grades 9-7 with 76% being at 9-8 and nine students achieving straight 9s. St Olave’s was ranked in the Top Secondary Schools for Academic Results in The Sunday Times State Schools Guide 2023. Ofsted also reported that the school was Outstanding in their most recent report in 2019.

Admissions information for 2024 entry to St Olave's School at 11 Plus (11+)

There are 124 places available at the school, with approximately 12 applications per place. There is no catchment area but there are priority criteria and oversubscription criteria.

Stage 1 results are placed in rank order with the top 450 boys being invited to sit the Stage 2 exam. Stage 2 results are standardised and aggregated with Stage 1 results to create rankings.

The school’s priority criteria is as follows in order of top priority at the start: boys who meet their standards and have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that names the schools, Looked after and previously looked after children (PLAC), boys who receive Pupil Premium in rank order (max. 10 places), and then the rest of places are allocated out in rank order.

In addition, places are offered based on CAF preferences; forms that name St Olave’s Grammar School as their most preferred school are prioritised.

In the case of a tie-breaker situation, rank order is decided in the following order of priority: results in the Stage 2 maths paper, English writing paper, English reading paper, and finally, results in the Stage 1 SET test.

If there is still a tie-breaker situation, remaining places are offered via a random computerised number generator.

What is the entrance 11 Plus (11+) exam format at St Olave's School?

Candidates applying for 2024 entry to Year 7 at St Olave’s School will sit a Stage 1 and Stage 2 exam.

Stage 1: Selective Eligibility Test (SET)

The Stage 1 exam is called the SET test and is a one-hour multiple-choice exam testing the following areas:

  • English comprehension
  • Maths
  • Verbal reasoning
  • Non-verbal reasoning


Stage 2:

The Stage 2 exam uses two one hour written tests to assess the following areas:

  • English – creative writing and a multiple-choice reading section
