St James Senior Girls’ School is an independent day school for girls aged 11-18. Located in Kensington, London, St James is recognised nationally for its excellent academic record and positive school environment. [1]

Some highlights from their 2022 GCSE and A Level exam results include 6 pupils achieving grade 9 in GCSE Biology; 5 pupils achieving an A* in GCSE Sanskrit; 6 pupils achieving an A* in A Level Art History; and 4 pupils achieving an A* in A Level English Literature. Following their inspection in October 2019, the ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate) reported that the school was ‘excellent’ across all categories and noted that the ‘main factors behind pupils’ excellent achievements are the high quality of teaching’. [2]

St James offers a broad curriculum, alongside a wide range of additional learning activities, designed to inspire students and encourage them to pursue their passions. As well as offering the core subjects which are taught by specialist teachers, such as maths, English and science, the school offers a selection of other subjects, such as an array of modern foreign languages, ancient civilisations, art, drama, history and computer science. [3]

Aside from its impressive academic reputation, St James offers a wide range of extra-curricular clubs, encouraging students to explore their interests beyond the classroom and develop into well-rounded individuals. There are a large number of clubs and societies including an array of sports, music and drama options; Book Club; Creative Writing Club; Zoology Club; Coding Club; and Dungeons & Dragons. [4]

Admissions information for 2024 entry to St James Senior Girls’ School at 11 Plus (11+)

The school strongly recommends that prospective students and their parents attend one of St James’ open events. You can find out more information about when the next open event is on the St James website

This will give you and your child the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the facilities, meet the staff, and ensure St James is the right choice for you.

St James is an academically selective school and every place is competitively sought after. There are three parts to their 11+ admissions process:

  • School Reference: a confidential reference from your daughter’s current Headteacher.
  • Assessment: testing your daughter’s cognitive ability, analysis, synthesis, problem-solving and creative and critical thinking.
  • Interview: face-to-face interview to explore their current skill set and intellectual ability.

The school does not value one part of the application process over another. The reference, examination and interview are all considered equally important.

St James is part of the London 11+ Consortium and has adopted a coordinated approach to the 11+ examination with these other schools. When you apply to St James, you must inform them of where your daughter will sit the exam. Your daughter can sit the exam in her current school, if they are able to host it, or any of the London 11+ Consortium Schools that you have applied to.

How can I register my child for the 11 Plus (11+) exam at St James Senior Girls’ School?

To register your child for St James, you should complete the online application form which can be found here. The registration fee is £125 and is non-refundable.

If you wish to apply for a bursary you can do this on the same registration form link or contact the registrar for further details.

What is the entrance 11 Plus (11+) exam format for St James Senior Girls’ School?

The entrance exam is 100 minutes long and it is split into five distinct sections:

  • Maths: 20 minutes. Based on the National Curriculum for Year 5 and will not test anything on the Year 6 curriculum
  • Non-verbal reasoning: 10 minutes. Assessment of the candidate’s ability to identify patterns and think logically
  • English comprehension: 20 minutes. Piece of fiction, written especially for the Consortium exams. No extended writing is required
  • Verbal reasoning: 10 minutes. Assessment of a candidate’s ability to identify the correct use of standard English in context
  • Break: 30 minutes
  • Puzzles and problem-solving: 15 minutes. Tests the ability of candidates to use words and numbers to solve multi-step problems
  • Creative comprehension: 25 minutes. Candidates have to use information from a variety of different sources to answer questions

The first part of the test, up to the break, is adaptive. This means the questions are tailored to the child’s performance.

The second part is non-adaptive, meaning all the candidates will have the same questions. The English comprehension passage will also be the same for all candidates, but the questions will be adaptive.

How to prepare your child for the London 11 Plus (11+) Consortium exam

The most useful way to prepare for the London 11+ Consortium’s entrance exam is to use practice tests to familiarise your child with the exam content and format.
