St James Senior Boys’ School is a leading independent day school for boys, located in Ashford, Surrey. In 2022, 42% of GCSE grades were 9-7 and 87% of A Level grades were A*-C. In their 2022 review, the Good Schools Guide noted that they ‘could not have been happier with the quality of teaching at St James’ and, in their most recent inspection, the ISI (Independent School Inspectorate) reported that the school was ‘excellent’ in many of its categories. St James offers a broad and stimulating curriculum, nurturing young minds and providing specialist teaching. The curriculum in Year 7 includes traditional subjects, such as English, maths and science, as well as other subjects including an array of modern foreign languages; Latin and Greek; Sanskrit; design technology; music; singing; drama; history; and physical education. Alongside their engaging curriculum, St James offers an extensive range of extra and co-curricular activities. These clubs, societies and activities encompass a range of sports and physical activities; CCF Cadets; Duke of Edinburgh; subject clinics; debating and public speaking; drama; music; Student Council; charity opportunities; and Young Enterprise. Admissions information for 2024 entry to St James Senior Boys’ School at 11 Plus (11+)

The school strongly recommends that prospective students and their parents attend one of St James’ open events. Their next open event will take place on 7 October 2023. There are also school tours running until November 2023. You can book and find out more information about these events on the St James website. Please ensure you book this event early, as places tend to fill up quickly.

This will allow you and your child to familiarise yourselves with the facilities, meet the staff, and ensure St James is the right choice for you. 

St James is an academically selective school and every place is competitively sought after. There are approximately 60 spaces available in Year 7. 

Admission in Year 7 is based on an entrance exam written by GL Assessment, which will take place on 4 December 2023, and an interview with a senior member of staff on 20 January 2024.

The school does not value one part of the application process over another. The examination and interview are considered equally important. School reports and references are also taken into consideration. 

Priority entry is given to any candidate who has a family member within the St James family of schools.

How can I register my child for the 11 Plus (11+) exam at St James Senior Boys’ School?

To register your child for St James, you should complete the online application form which can be found here. You must submit your application with the following documents:

  • Your son’s recent school report 
  • £125 registration fee
  • A copy of your son’s passport 
  • Any accompanying information regarding learning support needs or exam arrangements

If you wish to apply for a bursary you can submit an application by requesting it on the registration form. You can apply for a scholarship (sport, music, drama) by filling out an application form after you have registered. You can find the application forms and more details here.

What is the 11 Plus (11+) entrance exam format for St James Senior Boys’ School?

The St James 11+ examination consists of three multiple-choice papers:

  • English (1 hour)
    • In line with the National Curriculum up to the start of Year 6
    • Includes aspects of reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation and grammar 
  • Maths (1 hour)
    • In line with the National Curriculum up to the start of Year 6
    • Includes aspects of number, measurement, geometry and statistics
    • Some questions will involve using current maths skills to solve new kinds of maths problems
  • Verbal reasoning (1 hour)
    • Includes the production of words, use of words and relationship between words
    • Some questions will involve reasoning with letters and numbers 

These tests are all set by GL Assessment.
