Royal Latin School is a co-educational grammar school for children aged 11 to 18, located in Buckingham. Founded in 1423, Royal Latin School is the oldest school in Buckinghamshire and is currently celebrating its 600th anniversary. [1]

Royal Latin School is renowned for its academic excellence. In 2022, 84% of their A Level grades were A*-B and 79% of their GCSE grades were 9-7. In their 2022 Ofsted report, they were graded ‘Outstanding’ in three categories: ‘Behaviour and attitudes’, ‘Personal development’, and ‘Sixth-form provision’. Ofsted reported that ‘Pupils are incredibly happy and proud to be a part of this high-achieving school’. [2]

The school has a clearly defined ethos and set of values. Their teaching is based around ‘LATIN Learning’, which stands for ‘leadership, aspiration, teamwork, innovation and nurturing’. The school’s Key Stage 3 (KS3) curriculum encompasses a wide range of subjects, including art & design, computer science, drama, English, food science, an array of modern foreign languages, history, music, and maths. [3]

Royal Latin School believes that outstanding education should involve opportunities to learn through different mediums and in a variety of settings. Therefore, the school runs a number of enrichment opportunities to further pupils’ confidence and sense of community, including music lessons, a number of extra-curricular trips, sports fixtures, art, chess, computing, debating, and design clubs, as well as the Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE). Admissions information for 2024 entry to Royal Latin School at 11 Plus (11+)

The school strongly advises that you attend one of its open events. The next open evening is on 6 July 2023 between 4.30pm and 8pm. You do not need to book a place to attend this event. If you are unable to make this event, you can find an interactive virtual tour of the school with videos from all of the departments here

Royal Latin School is part of the Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools Consortium (BGSC) and follows its coordinated admissions process. The BGSC admissions test is called The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT), which will take place on 14 September 2023.

All the schools in the BGSC use the same academic test to assess candidates. This means that if your child is applying for a place at a number of these schools, they will only need to take the test once.

Results will be released in early October and, after receiving this information, you must submit a Common Application Form (CAF) to your local authority, naming ‘Royal Latin School’ as one of your selections. Please note that the order you place schools on your CAF is reflected as your preference.

Admission to Royal Latin School is highly competitive. There are 174 places available in Year 7 at Royal Latin School for 2024 entry.

Children are eligible to be considered for admission to Royal Latin School if they score 121 or over in the STT. The school has implemented a set of oversubscription criteria to allocate these spaces to eligible applicants:

  • Looked after, or previously looked after, children
  • Children living in the school’s catchment area
  • Siblings of children who are at the school
  • Children of staff members who have either been at the school for over two years or they have been hired to fill a position where there is a demonstrable skill shortage
  • Children who have exceptional medical or social needs
  • Students who qualify for Pupil Premium
  • Looked after, or previously looked after, children or children who live in the catchment area who qualify for Pupil Premium that scored 110 to 120 in their STT (6 places max.)
  • Siblings of children who have previously attended the school
  • Once these criteria have been applied, the remaining places will be allocated in distance order

How can I register my child for the 11 Plus (11+) exam at Royal Latin School

Children who attend a state-funded Buckinghamshire primary school are automatically entered for the Secondary Transfer Test (STT) and, therefore, do not need to register. However, children who attend Partner Schools, independent schools or a primary school outside of Buckinghamshire can register before 16 June 2023.

To begin the registration process, you should request more information through the admissions section of the Buckinghamshire Council website. You should select the query option ‘I would like information about testing for September 2021 entry or later’ to access information and register your interest in the STT.

What is the 11 Plus (11+) entrance exam format for Royal Latin School

The entrance exam is called the Secondary Transfer Test (STT) and consists of two 60-minute papers which are provided by GL Assessment. The test will measure the following skills:

Paper 1

  • English and verbal reasoning (50% weighting)

Paper 2

  • Non-verbal reasoning (25% weighting) – includes spatial reasoning
  • Maths (25% weighting)

Both papers are taken on the same day with a short break in between. Candidates must achieve a standardised score of 121 or above to be considered for entry to a Buckinghamshire grammar school.

Children who attend a state-funded Buckinghamshire primary or Partner School will sit both the practice and official STT in their school. Children who attend any other school will sit both the practice and official STT at a grammar school test centre. The practice test is on 12 September 2023 and the official test is two days later on 14 September 2023.
