About Royal Grammar School

The Royal Grammar School (High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire), not to be confused with the Royal Grammar School (Guildford), is an all-boys grammar school founded in 1548. Royal Grammar School is acclaimed for its academia, with 85.3% of their A Level grades awarded A*-B and 75.9% of GCSE grades awarded 9-7. [1]

The school’s curriculum is broad, giving its students a diverse education and allowing them to specialise in a number of subjects. An array of languages, humanities subjects, maths, the sciences, creative and performing arts, and numerous sports options are all part of the varied curriculum on offer at Royal Grammar School. [2]

Royal Grammar School also offers a vast selection of extra and co-curricular activities outside of the curriculum, giving each child the opportunity to develop their interest and excel with their talents. Music options (such as choirs, private lessons, and bands), Combined Cadet Force (CCF), The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), art club, computer programming and robotics club, debating club, and history society, are just some of the exciting opportunities Royal Grammar School offers. 

There are over 100 exciting trips and excursions on offer throughout the year. From small one-day trips to art galleries like the Tate Britain to ski trips and academic visits to Vienna, there are a wide range of opportunities to explore. [3]

Admissions information for 2027 entry to Royal Grammar School at 11 Plus (11+)

The school strongly advises that you attend one of its open events. The next open evening is in July 2026 and the next open mornings are in October 2026. You do not need to book a place to attend these open events. You can find more information about them here. They also have a virtual Year 7 open event, which you can find here. 

Royal Grammar School is part of the Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools Consortium (BGSC) and follows its coordinated admissions process. The BGSC admissions test is called The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT), which will take place in September 2026. 

All the schools in the BGSC use the same academic test to assess candidates. This means that if your child is applying for a place at a number of these schools, they will only need to take the test once. 

Results will be released in early October and, after receiving this information, you must submit a Common Application Form (CAF) to your local authority, naming ‘Royal Grammar School’ as one of your selections. Please note that the order you place schools on your CAF is reflected as your preference. 

Admission to Royal Grammar School is extremely competitive. The published admissions number (PAN) of students for Year 7 entry is usually 182 day places and 10 boarding places. 

Boys are eligible to be considered for admission to Royal Grammar School if they score 121 or over in the STT. The school has implemented a set of oversubscription criteria to allocate these spaces to eligible applicants:

  • Looked after, or previously looked after, children 
  • Boys living in the catchment area who qualify for free school meals 
  • Brothers of children at the school
  • Children in the catchment area of the school
  • Sons of members of staff who have been employed for over two years or have been employed in a position where there is a demonstrable skill shortage
  • Any further places will be allocated in distance order from the school

How can I register my child for the 11 Plus (11+) exam at Royal Grammar School

Children who attend a state-funded Buckinghamshire primary school are automatically entered for the Secondary Transfer Test (STT) and, therefore, do not need to register. However, children who attend Partner Schools, independent schools or a primary school outside of Buckinghamshire must register by early June 2026. 

To begin the registration process, you should request more information through the admissions section of the Buckinghamshire Council website.

What is the 11 Plus (11+) entrance exam format for Royal Grammar School?

The entrance exam is called the Secondary Transfer Test (STT) and consists of two 60-minute papers which are provided by GL Assessment. The test will measure the following skills:

Paper 1

  • English and verbal reasoning (50% weighting)

Paper 2

  • Non-verbal reasoning (25% weighting) – includes spatial reasoning
  • Maths (25% weighting)

The exam is administered by The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS), a consortium composed of the thirteen grammar schools in Buckinghamshire. 

A few days before your child takes the official exam, they will take a shorter practice test to help them to better understand the format of the entrance exam. As previously mentioned, Buckinghamshire primary school or partner school students will sit the test at their school but all other children will sit the test at a grammar school centre.

To be considered for admission into Royal Grammar, your child must achieve a pass mark of 121 or higher. Notably, the assessments are age-weighted (based on the candidate’s age and the assessment date) to ensure all candidates are equally considered. 

You will be able to access these results in October through the Buckinghamshire Council website. The details you will need for the Transfer Test results are:

  • Your child’s student number (which will have been provided in a letter or email)
  • Your child’s surname
  • Your child’s date of birth
  • Your name and email address as the parent or legal guardian
