Reigate Grammar School (RGS) is a co-educational independent day school for children aged 11-18. The school is located in the town of Reigate, Surrey, and was founded in 1675.

In their most recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report, RGS was rated as ‘excellent in all areas’. This is reflected in the school’s main priority, which is to ‘care for and support each individual child, and nurture their unique blend of talents and abilities’ and pride themselves on being a community where students flourish. [1]

RGS’s Lower School curriculum is designed to be broad whilst inspiring and challenging students. In addition to the full range of national curriculum subjects, the Year 7 students at RGS have the opportunity to study up to three modern foreign languages (French, German, Spanish, or Mandarin), as well as Latin. All Year 7 students also have the chance to explore a range of creative subjects such as DT, drama, music, art, food & nutrition and computing. [2]

RGS also offer a diverse co-curricular programme, encouraging all students to take advantage of the wide range of opportunities available to them. Various sport, music, drama, chess and debating activities are on offer, as well as many more specialist clubs and societies like cookery, film, flight simulator, Combined Cadet Force (CCF), and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (D of E). It is strongly recommended that prospective students and their parents attend one of RGS’s open events if you are applying for a place in Year 7. The next open event will be held on 30 September 2023, and more information can be found here. This will give you and your child the opportunity to familiarise yourself with the facilities, meet the staff, and ensure RGS is the right choice for you and your child.

Children are normally admitted to RGS in September at the ages of 11,13 or 16, although spaces do occasionally occur at other ages. RGS is an academically selective school, and every place is competitively sought after. Children seeking a 2024 Year 7 place will first have to pass the 11+ entrance exam. There are usually around 155 places available for Year 7 entry.

During the 11+ exam day, prospective pupils will also have the opportunity to sample one of the extra or co-curricular activities on offer at RGS. All candidates sitting the 11+ exam will automatically be considered for an academic scholarship.

Later in January, candidates will be interviewed by a member of staff, where they will be asked about their hobbies and interests. After this, the children will also have a group interview with the headmaster.

Offers are then sent out on 8 February 2024, and acceptance forms must be returned by 5 March 2024.

What is the 11 Plus (11+) entrance exam format for Reigate Grammar School?

The 11+ entrance assessment for RGS consists of three papers:

  • Maths (written/standard format)
  • English (written/standard format)
  • Reasoning – verbal and non-verbal (written/multiple choice)

The 11+ maths exam assesses your child’s knowledge and understanding of Key Stage 2 national curriculum content. This paper will include questions on numerical reasoning, shapes and space, algebra, fraction, decimal, and percentage problems, and data interpretation.

The English paper will examine both comprehension and creative writing skills. Examiners will be on the lookout for good use of vocabulary and accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar. In the creative writing section, your child will be tested on their composition skills, creativity, sentence structure, literary devices and organisation.

Verbal reasoning assesses your child’s language-based problem-solving abilities by testing their vocabulary, spelling, arithmetic, and pattern recognition skills. Your child will need a broad vocabulary and a good understanding of word definitions in and out of context to do well in this exam.

Non-verbal reasoning tests your child’s visual problem-solving abilities through sequential pattern recognition as well as logical and spatial thinking.
