About Putney High School

Founded in 1893, Putney High School, based in the Southwest of London, has long held its reputation as an independent day school for girls from different backgrounds. They champion academic excellence and offer their students a broad range of learning experiences to help them fulfil their potential.

They are a leading school and are nationally recognised among the Top 2 Schools for Sport. In 2022, 92% of GCSE grades were awarded grades 9-7 and 89% of A Level entries were awarded grades A*-B. 

Putney High School offers a varied and broad curriculum, providing many opportunities for cross-curricular learning. In Year 7, students are taught the core subjects, such as English, maths and the sciences, as well as a number of other subjects, such as debating, design & technology, an array of modern foreign languages and music. 

Beyond the curriculum, Putney High School offers a broad co-curricular programme. There are activities, such as debating and oracy; societies like the Medical Society; and opportunities to take part in unique experiences like speaking on the History Podcast.   

Putney High School acknowledges and supports students who may need some financial support in order to attend the school. For these students, there are both scholarships and means-tested bursaries available to support them in their studies.

11+ Admissions information for 2027 entry to Putney High School at 11 Plus (11+)

Every year, they select and welcome an average of 110 new students to the Year 7 cohort of their senior school. Of this number of students, around 60 will be external candidates, with the remaining students moving up from Putney’s Junior School. 

For 2027 entry, Putney High have outlined some key months to keep in mind. Early November is the application deadline for entry into the school. In late November, all applicants will sit their 11+ entrance exam. 

Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to a second and final assessment in mid-January 2027, including an interview with a senior member of staff. Shortlisted candidates who have applied for sport or music scholarships will also be invited to their scholarship assessments around this time. 

Then, in mid-February, the results will be announced to all applicants. Candidates who have been offered a place will then have until early March to accept their offer.

If your child is offered a place at Putney High School, then there is a £1500 acceptance deposit to secure their place. Once your child has left (not withdrawn) the school, this deposit will be returned to you.

How can I register my child for the Putney High School 11 Plus (11+) exams?

To register your child for the exam, you will need to complete the application form listed on Putney High’s website, which includes a £125 non-refundable fee. However, for overseas applicants, this will be £200. To start your application you must register for a parent account. 

If you are applying for a Bursary place at Putney High and you receive income support or housing benefit, this fee can be waived. However, you should contact their admission office beforehand to discuss the type of evidence they require.

What is the 11 Plus (11+) entrance exam format for Putney High School?

It is important to know that Putney High have 2 rounds of assessments for their entry exam process. They have the 11+ entrance exam and a final assessment for shortlisted candidates. To sit these exams, applicants will be invited to the school.

The 11+ entrance exams are bespoke digital assessments sat online. These assessments are approximately 1 hour and consist of the following topics:

  • English 
  • Maths 

The English exam will test the candidate’s comprehension skills, vocabulary and creative writing ability. And the Maths exam with assess their problem-solving skills.

The second stage of the exam process, which only shortlisted candidates will be invited to, is called the Athena Assessment. This is followed by a one-to-one interview.

Although Putney High do not publish any ‘official’ practice exam papers to assist with the preparation of their assessments, there are plenty of 11+ exam resources available to know the type of content your child will be tested on.
