About North London Collegiate School

North London Collegiate School in Edgware admits girls at 7+ into Year 3 of its Junior School. The school publishes the place count plainly: 8 to 10 places, which makes this one of the most selective 7+ entries in the country by raw numbers.

The assessment itself is two stages: written English and maths papers in November, then a class-taught morning at the school in December, with no interview at any point.

With 8 to 10 places, NLCS at 7+ is a long shot for every applicant, and it’s fairer to plan around that than to hope otherwise. The school’s assessment philosophy is worth quoting because it shapes the whole experience: ‘We are looking to discover what the children can do, not what they can’t do.’

Stage 1 on 13 November 2026 is written English and maths. Stage 2, on 1 December, is simply a morning of being taught as a class at the school; there’s no one-to-one interview at all. Offers arrive on Friday 22 January 2027, the same date as Highgate’s, with acceptance due by 3 February. Bursary support starts at 11+, not here.

How can I register my child for the 7 Plus (7+) assessment at North London Collegiate School?

Register on the school’s website between 1 May and Friday 30 October 2026. Unusually, NLCS does not publish its 7+ registration fee anywhere on its site, so budget for a typical London fee (£150 to £220 at comparable schools) and confirm when you apply.

What is the 7 Plus (7+) assessment format at North London Collegiate School?

English and maths only, and the school spells out what it expects: writing an imaginative story in full sentences, reading fluently, answering written comprehension questions, applying all four operations (including division as ‘sharing’) to word problems, knowing the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables, and basic shape, time, money and simple tables and charts.

That list is effectively a preparation syllabus, and it’s pitched at solid Year 2 level. The second stage can’t be rehearsed: it’s a class-taught morning where staff watch how girls learn, not what they’ve memorised.

North London Collegiate School 7 Plus (7+) top tips for your child

  • Work from the school’s own list: story writing in full sentences, fluent reading, four-operation word problems, and the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables
  • Don’t spend time on reasoning papers; NLCS doesn’t set one
  • Practise money, time and reading simple charts, which parents often skip
  • With 8 to 10 places, hold NLCS lightly and love your second choice too
  • Note the shared 22 January offer date with other north London schools when planning decision week
