Admissions information for 2027 entry to Newport Girls’ High School at 11 Plus (11+)

No pass mark is published in advance. The qualifying score is set each year after the papers have been marked and the order of merit is known, so there is no target number to aim at and no figure from a previous year that you should treat as the bar.

Newport Girls’ works through its criteria in strict stages and stops once the 120th girl has been admitted, so the order matters a great deal.

First come looked after and previously looked after girls scoring at least 95% of the qualifying score. Next, up to 15 places for girls eligible for the Pupil Premium who attend a Telford and Wrekin primary school listed in the policy, again at 95% or more of the qualifying score, ranked by score if that group is oversubscribed. Then girls living in the Newport boundary area who reach the qualifying score, ranked by score. Finally all other girls, wherever they live in the UK or abroad, ranked purely by standardised score, with distance breaking a tie for the final place.

The qualifying score itself is decided each year by a selection panel that includes the headteacher, another local headteacher, a local authority representative and two Shropshire primary heads. How can I register my child for the 11 Plus (11+) exams at Newport Girls’ High School?

You do not register with Newport Girls’ High School directly, and you do not register with the council either. Registration for the entrance test is done through the West Midlands Grammar Schools website, which covers every school in the partnership.

What is the 11 Plus (11+) entrance exam format for Newport Girls’ High School?

• Practise switching between question types. Each paper mixes verbal, non-verbal and maths questions, so you need to change gear quickly rather than settle into one subject.
