About Mill Hill County High School

Mill Hill County High School is a co-educational academy in Mill Hill, in the London Borough of Barnet, taking pupils from Year 7 through to Sixth Form. The headteacher is Andy Stainton and the school is on Worcester Crescent, NW7 4LL.

It is a partially selective school rather than a grammar school, and that distinction matters when you are planning. Of the 243 Year 7 places, most are allocated without any test. Up to 60 are set aside for children who do well in one of the school’s aptitude tests: up to 24 for technological aptitude, up to 24 for musical aptitude and up to 12 for dance aptitude.

Because of that, families usually apply on two fronts at once. You make your normal Barnet secondary transfer application, and separately register for an aptitude test if you think your child has a strong chance in one of the three areas.

Admissions information for 2027 entry to Mill Hill County High School at 11 Plus (11+)

Places are offered in a set order. After looked-after and previously looked-after children, 90 places go on straight-line distance from the school, then siblings, then children of staff, and only then the aptitude places. The school publishes the distance it reached each year: 1.013 miles for 2026 entry, 1.230 miles in 2025, 1.078 miles in 2024 and 1.343 miles in 2023. If you live well outside that, an aptitude place is realistically your route in.

There is no catchment area and no feeder school. Barnet measures the distance in a straight line from the headteacher’s office to your front door, so road distance on a mapping app is not the figure that counts.

Siblings do not need to sit an aptitude test. If your older child is on the school roll when applications close and you live at the same address, the school says a place will be offered.

The open evening for 2027 entry is on Thursday 17 September 2026, from 5pm to 8pm, with last admission at 7.30pm. Tours run from 5pm and the headteacher speaks at 5.30pm, 6.15pm and 7pm. The school warns that queues are longest between 6pm and 7pm, so go early.

How can I register my child for the 11 Plus (11+) exams at Mill Hill County High School?

There are two separate applications and you may well need both.

The aptitude test. Registration is on the school’s own website and is strictly deadlined. For September 2027 entry it opened on Friday 20 March 2026 and closed at 3pm on Friday 8 May 2026. The school states plainly that late registrations are not accepted, so if you are planning for September 2028 entry, watch the school’s admissions pages from early spring 2027 and register as soon as the window opens. Registered families were told their test date and time by Friday 22 May 2026.

The school place itself. This goes through Barnet’s common application form, which opens on 1 September 2026 and closes at 11.59pm on Saturday 31 October 2026. You list Mill Hill County High among your preferences in your true order; schools are not told where you ranked them. Offers arrive on Monday 1 March 2027.

Aptitude tests are not compulsory. Skipping one does not stop you applying under any other criterion.

What is the 11 Plus (11+) entrance exam format for Mill Hill County High School?

Only one of the three aptitude tests is a written reasoning paper. The school describes it as the Technological Aptitude Test, covering verbal reasoning and abstract reasoning, and the papers come from GL Assessment. It is sat at the school on Saturday 12 September 2026 for 2027 entry, with results by Friday 16 October 2026, in good time for the 31 October application deadline.

The two skills tested are:

• Verbal reasoning tests problem-solving with words: vocabulary, letter and word patterns, codes and logic. A wide reading vocabulary counts for a lot here.
• Abstract reasoning, more often called non-verbal reasoning, tests problem-solving with shapes, sequences and diagrams rather than words.

The musical and dance aptitude tests are practical assessments held in June and are judged on performance, not on a written paper.

The school is clear that an aptitude test result is final and cannot be appealed on its own, and that a missed test needs a medical note within five working days.

• Check the distance figures first. If you are comfortably inside about a mile, your child may well get a place without any test at all, and the aptitude route is a bonus rather than the plan.
• Diarise the registration window a year ahead. The 2027-entry window ran from 20 March to 8 May 2026 and closed at 3pm. Missing it by an hour ends that route for the year.
• Practise both skills, not just one. The technological test is verbal reasoning and abstract reasoning together, so a child who is strong on shapes but shaky on word codes will lose marks that were winnable.
• Build vocabulary early. Verbal reasoning rewards reading done over months, not a fortnight of drilling, so start wider reading well before Year 6.
• Work to time. These are multiple-choice reasoning papers under time pressure. Practising a full paper against the clock is worth more than untimed question sets.
• Apply under every criterion that fits. The school confirms you can be considered under more than one, and an unsuccessful aptitude application does not affect the others.
