Kingston Grammar School is an independent co-educational day school in Kingston upon Thames, London for 11 to 18-year-olds. It was founded by royal charter in 1561 but its history roots back all the way to the 13th century. Today, it supports over 800 students.

The school boasts fantastic academic results with over 75% of all grades achieved at GCSE being grades 9-8, 92% of all grades achieved at A Level being A*-B. 90% of leavers were also able to attain their first or second choice of course and university in 2022.

Further, Kingston Grammar has been shortlisted in three Independent Schools’ Admissions, Marketing and Communications (AMCIS) Awards this year: The Digital Impact Award, The Branding Impact Award and The Admissions Award. Additionally, in their most recent report from 2017, the ISI graded the school ‘excellent’ in multiple categories and wrote that ‘Pupils are determined to live up to the school motto ‘Work well and be happy’, and in this they are conspicuously successful’.

The school has on offer great facilities like a library, chapel, theatre, 22-acre playing fields with courts, cricket squares, astro-turf and a boat house. You can take a virtual tour of these extensive facilities on their website.

Lastly, they have a well-rounded extra-curricular programme with over 70 different clubs. Over 90 students are currently enrolled in their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award and over 20 students are enrolled in their Gold DofE Award. The school is also proud to have had 28 of their alumni appear in the Olympic Games.

Admissions information for 2024 entry to Kingston Grammar School at 11 Plus (11+)

Online applications for Year 7 entry into Kingston Grammar School are available on the school’s website till early October 2023. 

If you would also like to apply for an academic, music or sports scholarship, you will need to fill out an application form through their website by November 2023.

The entrance examination will take place at Kingston Grammar at the start of November 2023 and will consist of two papers testing English and maths which you can find the format of broken down below. 

Interview decisions will be sent out at the end of November and interviews will be held on school premises in early January 2024.

Offers will be mailed out in February; you must accept the offer by the early March 2024 deadline. There are approximately 800 to 1000 candidates for 125 places.

How can I register my child for the 11 Plus (11+) exam at Kingston Grammar School?

To register your child for the entrance exams, you must fill out the online registration form on their website. You will need to submit personal contact information, a passport-style photo of your child, a photo of your child’s visa (if they require one), and a non-refundable registration fee of £135 (unless your child receives free school meals).

Make sure to check your email inbox after you have completed the registration form because Kingston’s admissions team will send you a confirmation email. If you do not receive an email, do get in contact with their team to check your registration has successfully gone through their system.

What is the 11 Plus (11+) entrance exam format for Kingston Grammar School?

The entrance exam comprises two papers:

  • English (standard format and multiple-choice questions) – tests comprehension & writing skills (spelling, punctuation, grammar & inference)
  • Maths (standard format questions) – non-calculator paper testing numerical skills (arithmetic, algebra, data, shape, measurement)
