About Hampton Prep
The 7+ route into Hampton is run by Hampton Prep on Gloucester Road, a separate school entity from Hampton School itself (whose own entry points remain 11+, 13+ and 16+, covered in our Hampton School 11+ guide).
The structure changed in September 2026: Hampton and Hampton Prep became a single all-through school for boys aged 7 to 18, and boys entering at 7+ are guaranteed a place through to the Upper Sixth with no further competitive assessment. The Year 3 intake is expanding from one form to two.

Admissions information for 2027 entry to Hampton Prep at 7 Plus (7+)
Hampton Prep’s 7+ morning is deliberately built to feel like a normal school day for a six-year-old: three short assessments threaded between outdoor play, group problem-solving and an individual conversation in which each boy talks about a treasured object he brings along. Parents hear the outcome within ten days.
The school’s guidance is low-pressure throughout: no special preparation is needed for the maths, and the online reasoning exercise requires nothing beyond being comfortable with a mouse, keyboard or touchscreen. What has changed is the stakes: since the September 2026 merger, a 7+ place is an all-through place, which makes this small, friendly-sounding morning the main academic gateway to Hampton.
How can I register my child for the 7 Plus (7+) assessment at Hampton Prep?
Register on hamptonprep.org.uk with the £150 fee; registration is open now, can be done at any time, and the school recommends registering early. Assessment dates for the 2027 cycle aren’t published on the admissions page, so confirm the calendar with the school once registered.
What is the 7 Plus (7+) assessment format at Hampton Prep?
Three short assessments: English on pen and paper (reading comprehension activities and story writing), maths as age-appropriate arithmetic tasks, and reasoning as an online exercise. The school explicitly says no special preparation is required for the English and maths, and only device familiarity for the reasoning.
Between the assessments sit play, group problem-solving and the treasured-object chat, which is as close as a 7+ gets to a formal invitation to be yourself. Help your son pick an object he genuinely loves talking about, and leave the rest alone.
Hampton Prep 7 Plus (7+) top tips for your child
- Register early; the school recommends it, and dates are confirmed after registration
- Let your son choose the treasured object himself, and practise nothing about it
- Some mouse or touchscreen time is the only reasoning preparation the school asks for
- Story writing and daily reading cover the English paper’s two halves
- Remember which entity you’re dealing with: Hampton Prep runs the 7+, while Hampton School’s own entry points start at 11+
