About Wiltshire Grammar Schools

Making the right choice between different grammar schools can be a tough decision for parents. Whilst all grammar schools offer great starts for children, it is often difficult to find comprehensive information concerning the different schools available and the best options for your children out there.

This guide aims to provide clear and concise information regarding the two grammar schools in Wiltshire: Bishop Wordsworth’s School (BWS) and South Wilts Grammar School (SWGS). 

This includes general information, information concerning the tests followed by key details about each school including statistics, facilities, results, and Ofsted reviews.

In the coming sections of this article, the below listed key terms mean the following:

  • CAF: Common Application Form, the form you must submit to your local authority listing the schools of your choice in order of preference 
  • PAN: Published Admission Number, the number of places available for year 7 entry in 2024 at 11 plus (11+) level

Admissions information:

  • Scoring: no specific pass mark (historically it has been an age-standardised 70-74%), Bishop Wordsworth’s School has a pass mark of 3% lower than the standard pass mark for children who receive Free School Meals (up to 10 places).

Exam format for the Wiltshire 11 plus (11+) entrance exam

The Wiltshire 11 plus

For the two Wiltshire-based grammar schools, there are two separate 11 plus exams.

Bishop Wordsworth’s School (BWS) 11 plus exam

The computer-marked entrance exam is composed of two multiple-choice 45-minute tests in one booklet:

  • Paper 1: Verbal skills – letter/word-based problem-solving questions (20 minutes) & Key Stage 2 English national curriculum (KS2) (25 minutes).
  • Paper 2: Non-verbal & maths skills – numerical/visual problem-solving questions (two 10-minute sub-tests) & Key Stage 2 Maths national curriculum (KS2) (25 minutes).
 
South Wilts Grammar School (SWGS) 11 plus exam
 
The computer-marked entrance exam is composed of three multiple-choice tests each lasting 50 minutes (approx.) in one booklet and testing respectively:
 
  • Maths: Key Stage 2 Maths national curriculum (KS2).
  • English: Key Stage 2 English national curriculum (KS2).
  • Verbal reasoning: letter/word-based problem-solving questions.

Catchment area: Winterbourne Stoke in the north, Middle Winterslow in the east, Downton in the south & Teffont Magna in the west (the south & east borders of the catchment area are Wiltshire/Hampshire’s county borders).
 

2022 Results: GCSE: 75.7% of students achieved grades 9-7, A Level: 81.3% of students achieved grades A*-B.
