Exam format for the Sutton Grammar School 11 plus (11+) entrance exam

The Selective Eligibility Test (SET)

For Sutton-based grammar schools, students must take the Selective Eligibility Test (SET). This test is created by the schools and they share an admissions scheme, meaning you only have to register once to take the test.

This entrance test is composed of two papers, each lasting approximately 40-50 minutes. All questions are multiple-choice. These papers will test the following areas:

  • English
    • Contains a spelling section followed by three comprehension sections
    • The question formats in this paper are more difficult and varied than a standard 11+ multiple-choice paper, with question types like ‘Select the most accurate answer’ and ‘Select all the relevant options’
  • Maths
    • Questions are based on the KS2 curriculum

The Second-Stage Test

All the grammar schools in Sutton, except for Greenshaw High School, have a second-stage entrance test. The second-stage test takes place on 30 September 2023.

Nonsuch and Wallington High School share a second-stage test called the NWSEE (Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination). Sutton Grammar School, Wilson’s School and Wallington County Grammar also share a second-stage test. It is important to note that because these schools have different admissions criteria, children may be considered for the second-stage test at some schools and not others.

There are two main subjects in the second-stage test: English and maths. The content for these tests is based on the Key-Stage 2 National Curriculum. These tests are in written format, not multiple-choice, and the English exam is usually based on a prompt.
