Making the right choice between different grammar schools can be a tough decision for parents. Whilst all grammar schools offer great starts for children, it is often difficult to find comprehensive information concerning the different schools available and the best options for your children out there.

This guide aims to provide clear and concise information regarding the five grammar schools in the Consortium of Grammar Schools in Shropshire, Walsall, and Wolverhampton (SWW Consortium): Haberdashers’ Adams Grammar School, Newport Girls’ High School, Queen Mary’s Grammar School, Queen Mary’s High School, and Wolverhampton Girls’ High School. 

This includes general information, information concerning the tests followed by key details about each school including statistics, facilities, results, and Ofsted reviews.

In the coming sections of this article, the below listed key terms mean the following:

  • CAF: Common Application Form, the form you must submit to your local authority listing the schools of your choice in order of preference 
  • PAN: Published Admission Number, the number of places available for year 7 entry in 2024 at 11 plus (11+) level

Exam format for the Shropshire, Walsall, and Wolverhampton Grammar School 11 plus (11+) entrance exam

The Shropshire, Walsall, and Wolverhampton 11 plus

For Shropshire, Walsall, and Wolverhampton-based grammar schools, students must take the West Midlands 11 plus (11+). The entrance exam is set by GL Assessment and composed of two multiple-choice 60-minute papers testing:

  • English comprehension – tests Key Stage 2 English national curriculum (KS2).
  • Maths – tests Key Stage 2 Maths national curriculum (KS2).
  • Verbal reasoning – letter/word-based problem-solving questions.
  • Non-verbal reasoning – numerical/visual-based problem-solving questions.

Priority criteria:

  • [for day pupils] PLAC, boys who receive Pupil Premium & achieve no lower than 5% below the qualifying score, who attend a primary school in the TF10 area (in rank score order if this category is oversubscribed), other boys in rank score order. In a tiebreaker situation, the child who lives the nearest distance to the school is given priority.
 
  • [for boarding pupils] PLAC, children of members of the UK Armed Forces who qualify for Ministry of Defence financial assistance with the cost of boarding school fees, with a boarding need (see school website for the criteria which constitutes ‘boarding need’), other children in rank score order.

Catchment area: there is no catchment area but in the case of day school applications, boys who attend primary schools in Newport (TF10 postcodes).

  • Category 1: PLAC who achieve at least 95% of the qualifying score.
  • Category 2: girls who receive Pupil Premium (15 places max.), attend a Telford & Wrekin primary school & achieve at least 95% of the qualifying score (if the number of girls who meet these criteria exceeds 15, they are selected based off their ranked score, & if there is a tie for the 15th place, all girls with the 15th highest tied score are admitted).
  • Category 3: girls who live in the catchment area & achieve the qualifying score (if there are more girls than places in this category, they are selected based off their ranked score).
  • Category 4: girls living outside the catchment area in rank score order (if there is a tie for the 120th place, the girl who lives nearest to the school is selected).
 
Catchment area:  Under Category 2, priority is given to children who attend primary schools in the Telford & Wrekin authority.
