About Lincolnshire Grammar Schools

Making the right choice between different grammar schools can be a tough decision for parents. Whilst all grammar schools offer great starts for children, it is often difficult to find comprehensive information concerning the different schools available and the best options for your children out there.

This guide aims to provide clear and concise information regarding the eight grammar schools in Lincolnshire. This includes general information, information concerning the tests followed by key details about each school including statistics, facilities, results, and Ofsted reviews.

In the coming sections of this article, the below listed key terms mean the following:

  • CAF: Common Application Form, the form you must submit to your local authority listing the schools of your choice in order of preference
  • PAN: Published Admission Number, the number of places available for year 7 entry in 2024 at 11 plus (11+) level
  • EHCP: Education, Health and Care Plan, legal document that describes a person’s special educational needs
  • Pupil Premium: a grant that improves educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils
  • PLAC: (previously) looked after children

Key information for 2024 entry into Lincolnshire Grammar Schools at 11 plus (11+)

Exam format for the Lincolnshire Grammar School 11 plus (11+) entrance exam

The test itself consists of two different papers, each 50 minutes long and in a multiple-choice format.

The first paper will test a candidate’s ability in verbal reasoning, and consists of 80 questions.

These questions will be divided into a range of subsections, with each section consisting of anywhere between 5 – 7 questions of the same type.

The types of questions a candidate may encounter include:

  • Finding the opposite meanings of words.
  • Representing numerical values as letters.
  • Finding the relationship between different groups of words.
  • Identifying the pattern in numerical sequences.

In the real exam, children will be given a short, unmarked preliminary practice test before this verbal reasoning paper so they can familiarise themselves with the types of questions in the test.

The second paper will revolve around non-verbal reasoning and spatial reasoning, consisting of 70 questions.

This paper is split into five sections, with the first three sections asking questions based around non-verbal reasoning, and the last two sections testing a candidate’s ability in spatial reasoning.

Each section will have 14 questions, and must be completed in 7 minutes. Each section will be preceded by a few practice questions, which should take up the rest of the allocated time.

Whilst the verbal reasoning paper can be taken in any order, the non-verbal reasoning and spatial reasoning paper must be answered one section at a time following the precise instructions from the invigilator.

The types of questions a candidate may expect to
encounter on this paper include:

  • Recognising the relationship between shapes and series.
  • Finding which shape is the most unlike the others.
  • Finding the number of individual blocks that make up a 3D figure.
  • Recognising the appearance of a shape once it has been rotated.

Caistor Grammar School has two test papers, but in this instance both are based around verbal reasoning. The first paper is a standard verbal reasoning paper, which is then followed by a multiple-choice verbal reasoning paper a week later.
