About Hertfordshire Grammar Schools

Making the right choice between different grammar schools can be a tough decision for parents. Whilst all grammar schools offer great starts for children, it is often challenging to find comprehensive information concerning the different schools available and the best options for your children.

This guide aims to provide clear and concise information regarding the grammar schools in the South West Herts Consortium (SW Herts Consortium).

There are seven partially-selective schools in the South West Herts School Consortium.

This guide includes general information, details about the tests, and key information about each school, including statistics, facilities, results, and Ofsted reviews.

The following schools are not members of the SW Herts Consortium but are also partially-selective grammar schools in Hertfordshire:

In the coming sections of this article, the below listed key terms mean the following:

Exam format for the South West Herts Consortium 11 plus (11+) entrance exam

All schools in the SW Herts Consortium have an academic test apart from Croxley Danes School, which only has a music ability test.

GL Assessment devises the SW Herts academic entrance test. This exam consists of two multiple-choice papers, each lasting 50 minutes. Children must record their answers in a separate answer booklet, which is then marked electronically.

The subjects covered in the two papers are:

  • Maths
  • Verbal reasoning

The maths paper questions are based on the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum objectives for Years 5 and 6.

Verbal reasoning assesses your child’s language-based problem-solving abilities by testing their vocabulary, spelling, arithmetic, and pattern recognition skills.
