About Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools

Making the right choice between different grammar schools can be a tough decision for parents. This guide aims to provide clear and concise information regarding the thirteen grammar schools in the Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools Consortium (TGBS). This includes general information, information concerning the tests followed by key details about each school.

In the coming sections of this article, the below listed key terms mean the following:

  • EHCP: Education, Health and Care Plan, a legal document that describes a person’s special educational needs
  • Pupil Premium: a grant that improves educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils

Exam format for the Buckinghamshire Grammar School 11 plus (11+) entrance exam

For Buckinghamshire based grammar schools, students must take the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (11+); only one entrance test is required for entrance into any of the thirteen Buckinghamshire grammar schools. This entrance test is composed of two papers each lasting approximately 60 minutes, allocating 15 minutes for your child to carefully read the instructions and fill out practice exercises, and 45 minutes for the actual questions. All questions are multiple-choice with no written sections, and your child will be required to provide their answers on answer booklets which are separate from the papers.

These papers, which are produced by GL Assessment, will test the following areas:

  • Paper 1:
    • English comprehension – questions are based on the KS2 curriculum, reading comprehension task testing inference, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
    • Verbal reasoning – test of skill, problem-solving questions like written instructions requiring a solution, sequences, or number/letter code-cracking.
  • Paper 2:
    • Non-verbal reasoning – section 1 of this paper is a test of visual thinking, questions may involve deciphering relationships, determining similarities/differences between different sequences, shapes, and patterns.
    • Maths – section 2 of this paper is made up of maths questions based on the KS2 curriculum testing knowledge and application of arithmetic, ratios, fractions, algebra, measuring, to name a few.
