About Bexley Grammar Schools

Making the right choice between different grammar schools can be a tough decision for parents. Whilst all grammar schools offer great starts for children, it is often challenging to find comprehensive information concerning the different schools available and the best options for your children.

This guide aims to provide clear and concise information regarding the grammar schools in the London Borough of Bexley. There are four grammar schools in Bexley, all of which use the Bexley Selection Test to determine admission into Year 7: Beths Grammar School, Bexley Grammar School, Chislehurst and Sidcup Grammar School, and Townley Grammar School.

This guide includes general information, details about the tests, and key information about each school, including statistics, facilities, results, and Ofsted reviews.

Exam format for the Bexley 11 plus (11+) entrance exam

All schools in Bexley use the Bexley Selection test. Bexley Council recently announced that they are changing their 11+ provider from CEM to GL Assessment.

The Bexley Selection Test consists of two multiple-choice papers, each lasting 60 minutes. Children are given time at the beginning of each paper to read through the instructions and complete some practice questions.

Children must record their answers in a separate answer booklet, which is then marked electronically.

Both of the papers are divided into smaller, individually-timed sections. The subjects covered in these papers are:

  • Maths
  • English comprehension
  • Verbal reasoning
  • Non-verbal reasoning
  •

The maths and English questions are based on the Key Stage 2 National Curriculum objectives for Years 5 and 6.

Verbal reasoning assesses your child’s language-based problem-solving abilities by testing their vocabulary, spelling, arithmetic, and pattern recognition skills.

Non-verbal reasoning tests your child’s visual problem-solving abilities through sequential pattern recognition as well as logical and spatial thinking.
