About Dr Challoner’s Grammar School

Dr Challoner’s Grammar School is a boys’ grammar school with academy status in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. The school, which has thrived for 390 years, accepts students between the ages of 11 and 18 and has a co-educational Sixth Form. There are currently over 1300 students who are educated at the school. 

In 2022, 69% of Dr Challoner’s students’ GCSE results and 88% of their A Level results were grade 9-8 and A*-B respectively. Additionally, 87% of their Year 13/Upper Sixth leavers were accepted into their first-choice universities which included Russell Group and Oxbridge universities.

The school has received multiple awards and accreditations including the Gold Award in the Mind Workplace Wellbeing Awards for the fourth year in a row in 2021 as well as The School of Character kitemark and the Best State Sporting School in 2020. In 2019, Ofsted graded the school as ‘Outstanding’ in all respects.

Dr Challoner’s Grammar School’s key values are aspiration, kindness, and resilience. On the official school website, some of their past Year 7 students have recorded their favourite memories of the year which mention a trip to the Isle of Wight’s Sailing Academy, taking part in extra-curricular activities such as show choir, photography club, and tabletop club, as well as getting involved with their various sports teams including rugby, cricket, basketball, football, cross country, and hockey.

Registration is available on Buckinghamshire Council’s website until June.

There will also be an open evening hosted by the school in September 2026 for parents of prospective Year 7 students, which you can find further details about through their website. You must contact them by telephone to reserve your place at this open event or any other future events.

Results will be released in October and, after receiving this information, you must submit a secondary school application to your home local authority which names ‘Dr Challoner’s Grammar School’. 

In winter 2026-2027, Selection Reviews will be held where you can write why your child would be best suited to a grammar school. The Selection Review panel may still consider your child’s admission even if their score is below the pass mark. There are approximately 180 places available for Year 7 entry.

How can I register my child for the 11 Plus (11+) exam at Dr Challoner’s Grammar School?

To register your child for the entrance exams, you as their parent/legal guardian must complete a registration form through the ‘Admissions for Year 7’ entry page of the Buckinghamshire Council website. There you will need to specify your interest in finding out more information about the Secondary Transfer Test (11+). 

Click through the process the council website leads you through until you get to a tick-box selection with the option ‘I would like more information about testing for September 2021 entry or later’ to access the required information. 

If your child is a student of a Buckinghamshire primary school they will already be registered to take the test but you must still complete and submit a Supplementary Information Form (SIF) through the school website.

What is the entrance 11 Plus (11+) entrance exam format for Dr Challoner’s Grammar School?

The entrance exam is called the Secondary Transfer Test (STT) and consists of two 60-minute papers which are provided by GL Assessment. The test will measure the following skills:

Paper 1

  • English and verbal reasoning (50% weighting)

Paper 2

  • Non-verbal reasoning (25% weighting) – includes spatial reasoning
  • Maths (25% weighting)

The exam is administered by The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools (TBGS), a coalition composed of the thirteen grammar schools in Buckinghamshire. A few days before your child takes the official exam, they will take a shorter practice test to help them to better understand the format of the entrance exam. 

Buckinghamshire primary school or partner school students will sit both the practice and official test at their school but all other children will sit the practice and office test at a grammar school centre.

To be considered for admission into Dr Challoner’s Grammar School, your child must achieve a pass mark of 121 or higher. Notably, the assessments are age-weighted (based on the candidate’s age and the assessment date) to ensure all candidates are equally considered. 

You will be able to access these results in October through the Buckinghamshire Council website; the details you will need for the Transfer Test results are:

  • Your child’s student number (which will have been provided in a letter or email)
  • Your child’s surname
  • Your child’s date of birth
  • Your name and email address as the parent or legal guardian
