What is the 11 Plus (11+)?

If your child is applying for a selective school for Year 7 admission, they will likely have to take the 11+ exam. This exam assesses whether a candidate is suitable for admission to a grammar or independent school. There are 164 grammar schools and many independent schools that use the 11+ exam to allocate their Year 7 spaces each year.

Securing high marks in the 11+ will not necessarily ensure entry into your child’s chosen school, as there are usually other admission criteria; however, it will ensure that they have the opportunity to apply.

Waiting to hear whether your child has passed their 11+ exam can be an anxiety-inducing experience. In this article, we break down when you can expect your child’s 11+ results, what these results mean, and how to interpret and act on these results.

This article will focus on grammar school 11+ results. Information on when an independent school’s 11+ results are released can usually be found on the school’s website under their admission section or by contacting the school directly.

What do the test results mean?

Screenshot 2023 09 14 at 10.37.37

When you receive your child’s 11+ exam results, you will find out if they have achieved the ‘qualifying mark’ or pass mark set by the school or consortium.

You can find more detailed information about the qualifying mark and 11+ scoring in our other advice article: What Percentage Do You Need To Pass The 11 Plus (11+)?

The school will usually send you guidance on interpreting your child’s results, or they will include this information in their admissions policy. Some schools will tell you exactly what score your child has achieved, and others will only tell you if they have passed.

What do I need to do after receiving my child’s results?

If your child has achieved the qualifying mark, they can apply for a place at the school. It is important to note that achieving the qualifying score in the 11+ does not mean your child will automatically gain a place at their chosen school.

For grammar schools, achieving this score only means you can list the school as a preference on your child’s Common Application Form (CAF).

Screenshot 2023 09 04 at 09.31.12

The CAF is where you list your child’s top school choices in order of preference. The number of schools you can apply to depends on where you live. Most local authorities allow you to list up to three or four schools; however, if you live in London, you can list up to six.

The order in which you place schools in your CAF is important. If your child is eligible for a place at multiple schools, they will be offered whichever school you have placed highest on their form.

Other admissions oversubscription criteria, such as whether your child has a sibling at the school or is eligible for free school meals, are then considered and sometimes valued higher than 11+ results.

The CAF deadline is the 31st of October 2023. Schools will then collate all the applications and decide who they will offer spaces to.

When will I find out if my child has a place at their chosen school?

Screenshot 2023 09 14 at 10.38.51

You will be told which school your child has achieved a place at on National School Offer Day on 1st March 2024.

If you find out that your child has not received an offer from their top school, you can appeal this decision. The appeal process for each school is different and depends on your local authority.

If you decide to submit an appeal, it is a good idea to first accept the offer your child has received, as it will not affect your appeal request and ensures your child has a place at a school. You can find information about the appeals process from your local authority’s website; however, you usually have about 20 days to submit an appeal.
